Welcome to the Friends of New York City Abundance Substack! It’s a clunky name, but the mission is clear: create a space to discuss the opportunities for New York City to embrace an abundance agenda approach. This means broader civic engagement, more freedom, and greater institutional capacity to increase the size of the pie for individual New Yorkers. We think New York City too often embraces a scarcity mindset that thinks the pie is static or shrinking when the opposite could be true.
I was inspired to start this blog after taking the Maximum New York course. You should apply as well if you are even marginally interested in the history of New York City and how it works today. Of the ~ten people I took the course with, one is already applying to their Community Board and another is also starting a Substack (check it out: Transit Pillory Substack).
You can expect interviews and analysis from this Substack on New York City education, public health, and housing. Are you a casual observer of New York City government? We also want to post about how you can get more involved, since it can be daunting otherwise.
Hopefully this all plays a role in getting thoughtful and creative people here in New York City more aware of their powers to impact local governance. If that sounds interesting, please shoot us a subscription!
Can't wait to see where this blog is in three months. Based on our conversations, I suspect it'll be in a cooler place than anyone could imagine at the moment.
